👈 From the French Revolution Onward Uprisings for Bread and Against Inequality Have Been a Pillar of France.
✅ From the classics, read Karl Marx’s trilogy: The Class Struggles in France, The Civil War in France (1871), and The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte.
🔻 Then read Hannah Arendt’s On Revolution, which superbly explains that America never underwent a totalizing revolution because it was not gripped by poverty and instead pursued freedom. France, by contrast, was mired in deep poverty and misery, and its totalizing revolution aimed precisely at resolving that condition.
🔻 Next turn to Eric Hobsbawm’s profound four-volume classic: The Age of Revolution, The Age of Capital, The Age of Empire, and The Age of Extremes. Beyond profound historical awareness and deep social analysis, you will learn to set aside deep-seated racism.
🔹 Do not miss two profound books by two Jewish-American philosophers if you wish to grasp the depth of America’s structural racism—now led by Donald Trump: Susan Neiman’s Learning from the Germans: Race and the Memory of Evil (2019) and Martha Nussbaum’s The Monarchy of Fear (2018). Both appeared after Trump’s victory. Neiman has since published the excellent Call It Evil: Understanding the Trump Era (2026), in which she argues that Trump embodies absolute evil and that the fascist far right must be named as such. In the French uprisings one must also bring into view the profound effect of structural racism in France. With the far-right party, which will always win unless the entire left and socialists unite behind the center-right in elections.
