Regulators knew about Banking Crisis Risk and did NOTHING
US regulators were aware of the potential risks of uninsured deposits at some of the country's largest banks months before the recent market crisis hit.
According to sources, the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency all raised concerns about the potential fallout from uninsured deposits in the early months of 2023. Despite these concerns, no regulatory action was taken to address the issue before the crisis hit, leaving millions of Americans' savings at risk.
This revelation will come as no surprise to many critics of the US banking industry, who have long accused regulators of being too cozy with the very institutions they are supposed to oversee. As one industry observer noted, "The regulators are in bed with the banks, and they always have been. They talk a good game about protecting consumers, but when push comes to shove, they always side with their buddies on Wall Street."
The fallout from the recent crisis has yet to be fully felt, but there is no doubt that it will have long-lasting consequences for both the banking industry and ordinary Americans.
All of this could have been avoided if regulators had acted sooner to address the issue of uninsured deposits. But as with so many other issues in the banking industry, it seems that profits and power were put ahead of the interests of ordinary people. It is time for regulators to take a hard look at themselves and their relationship with the banking industry, and to start putting the needs of consumers first. Until that happens, Americans will continue to be at risk of losing their hard-earned savings to the greed and recklessness of the country's largest banks.
This is merely the tip of the iceberg.
Should we be concerned and are things going to get worse?
