🇸🇦 Philip Pilkington thinks Saudi Arabia has backed itself into a very dangerous financial corner. The kingdom has roughly $420 billion in reserves against about $520 billion in external debt. His biggest concern is the currency peg. As long as creditors believe the riyal will stay fixed to the dollar, they can remain relatively calm. But if confidence in that peg starts to crack, capital could leave fast. “The peg is the key.” Under normal circumstances, Saudi Arabia could respond with tax rises, spending cuts and other painful adjustments. But wars have a habit of overruling economic logic. Pilkington’s warning is that Riyadh may now be trying to defend its currency, finance a war and reassure creditors at the same time. 🇬🇧 Britain has 3,369 neighbourhoods where a majority of working-age adults claim out-of-work benefits. But who lives in these areas, and what's driving the numbers? Take Sparkbrook and Balsall Heath East in Birmingham, one of the areas examined by The Telegraph. The 2021 Census puts its population at 47% Pakistani, 12% Bangladeshi and just 9.5% White. Now look at the national employment figures. A third of working-age Pakistanis and Bangladeshis were economically inactive in 2022, compared with 21% of White British people. Among women, the difference was 48% versus 24%. That's a significant demographic disparity, particularly among women, and it deserves serious investigation. But these are population and economic inactivity figures, not a breakdown of actual benefit claimants in those streets. The missing question is how much of the local welfare concentration is explained by longstanding differences in employment patterns, health, household circumstances and access to work. 🇺🇸🇵🇦 The U.S. military has been making some pretty big deliveries to earthquake-hit Panama. After Friday's 7.7 quake damaged roads and bridges, getting supplies to some communities hasn't been easy. So U.S. Chinook helicopters have been flying in with water, food, and medical tents, working alongside Panamanian troops. And they've moved quite a lot already. More than 54,000 cases of water and 50,000 cans of food. The helicopters land wherever there's room, troops unload everything by hand, and then they're off to get the next load. We had an interesting conversation with former CIA operations officer Charles Finfrock, who thinks Washington may be preparing another major round of strikes against Iran. And unlike some of my other guests, Charles believes a concentrated 72-hour campaign could do serious damage, especially if coordinated with Israel. He wants the U.S. to target Iran's leadership, military command structure, missile capabilities and the security forces keeping the regime in power. But our disagreement really began when we talked about what happens afterward. Charles believes removing the regime could give Iranians a chance to determine their own future. Yet he also acknowledged that Iran could end up looking like Libya, with prolonged instability and no functioning democracy emerging anytime soon. That admission stuck. We've already seen what happened in Iraq and Libya. Removing a government is one thing. Building something better is quite another. Charles argues that Iran's nuclear ambitions make the risk worth confronting. But Brandon worries that another war could leave us with a fractured country, dangerous weapons in uncertain hands and yet another American commitment we can't easily escape. 🇵🇦 Panama is still shaking after a powerful 7.7 earthquake hit on Friday. More than 200 aftershocks have followed, though they’re getting weaker. Nearly 900 homes and at least 14 bridges were damaged, and 27 people were hurt. The government has declared a national emergency, and the U.S. is sending $5 million and a rescue team. The good news is that nobody has died so far, and the Panama Canal, one of the world’s busiest shipping routes, is still running as normal.
