The extraordinary American military buildup around Iran is making it look like Trump is preparing for a limited operation, possibly against Iran's Pickaxe Mountain nuclear facility, followed by a declaration of victory and an American withdrawal. But the central risk is whether everyone else would cooperate with his exit strategy. Iranian state television has reported that Washington sought permission for a symbolic strike without retaliation. That claim remains unverified, but Tehran's reported rejection raises the possibility that Iran would not simply absorb another American attack and move on. Then there is Israel. Israeli strikes against Iranian infrastructure could turn a limited U.S. operation into another prolonged conflict, regardless of Trump's intentions. Meanwhile, reports suggest Iran has rebuilt much of its missile-launching capacity while American interceptor stockpiles have been severely depleted. There are also concerns about U.S. refueling aircraft concentrated at regional airfields within range of Iranian weapons. That creates a dangerous calculation.
