On January 13, 2004, British photography student Tom Hurndall died after being shot by an Israeli sniper in Gaza nine months earlier. Tom was a volunteer for the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), and an activist against the Israeli occupation. At 21 years of age, he was shot in the head in April 2003 while trying to rescue children from Israeli gunfire in Gaza. Tom had seen a group of children playing and had noticed that bullets were hitting the ground between them. Several children had run away but some were “paralysed with fear” and Hurndall went to help them. Hurndall’s father told the inquest: “Tom went to take one girl out of the line of fire, which he did successfully, but when he went back, as he knelt down [to collect another], he was shot.” Tom was wearing an orange fluorescent vest to mark himself as an unarmed civilian.

Kōzō Okamoto was a Japanese revolutionary who joined the Japanese Red Army and fought against the Israeli occupation in the 1970's. In 1972, he took part in the Lod Airport operation in Israel, in coordination with the PFLP – General Command. He was captured and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1985, he was released in a prisoner exchange and moved to Lebanon, where he was granted political asylum. Protected by Palestinian factions, he spent the rest of his life as a symbol of international solidarity with Palestine. He once declared: “I gave my youth to the Palestinian cause. As long as there is oppression, resistance is not only a right, it is a duty.”

A documentary detailing Israel's attacks on Palestinian doctors in Gaza, which was dropped by the BBC, was nominated on Tuesday for the Bafta TV awards. Gaza: Doctors Under Attack - later aired by Channel 4 - documents Israel's attacks on Gaza’s hospitals and medical staff throughout its military campaign, laying out damning allegations that would amount to grave breaches of international law. The programme follows Palestinian doctors and paramedics as they care for patients under bombardment, showing hospitals damaged or destroyed and staff forced to flee while patients were left under fire. The documentary was produced by Basement Films and was originally commissioned by the BBC, which later decided not to broadcast it, saying airing the film “risked creating a perception of partiality that would not meet the high standards that the public rightly expect of the BBC”. Following its withdrawal, Channel 4 acquired the documentary, broadcasting it after rigorous editorial checks, with its producers praising the network's “commitment to brave and fearless journalism". The film also includes testimonies from medics who were detained, beaten, or tortured, and depicts the extraordinary efforts of doctors working with minimal resources under life-threatening conditions. The 2026 TV Baftas will take place on Sunday 10 May 2026.

Harald Fischer was a German chiropractor residing with his Palestinian wife in Beit Jala near Bethlehem. When Beit Jala was attacked by Israeli helicopter gunships. Fischer initially took cover under a stairwell with his wife, but later left his home to assist an injured neighbor whose house had been partially destroyed in the attack. As he entered the street Fischer was struck and instantly killed by an Israeli missile that left one of his legs severed and his body riddled with shrapnel.
